I was sent a question from a student who wrote:

“Just bought my first iPad ‘The New iPad’ and bought your lessons, but I still have a lot of questions.
How do you copy and paste? Do you have other lessons available.

Thanks
Sheila”

My response:

Hi Sheila,
I wonder if you may have missed some of the lessons included in the app, as I have 82 video lessons so far, including a tutorial covering how to copy & paste in the app.

You can find the lesson on how to copy and paste on the iPad by opening my app, then tapping the menu where it says “iPad Lessons”, then tap “Basics for iPad” on the next screen and you will be taken to a list of lessons covering iPad basics.

The third lesson down covers copying and pasting. Just tap it to watch and you’ll see the steps.

A quick written overview of the process:

1) double-tap (two quick taps) on one of the words you want to copy (tapping and holding your finger down will usually work as well).
You’ll see a blue “highlight” much like what you see on a regular computer when you select text there

2) At each end of the highlight are vertical bars which you can drag with your finger to extend the highlight to cover all of the words you want to copy. Once you have the highlight covering everything, raise your finger off the screen and you should see a couple of buttons floating above the highlight, including a “copy” button.

3) Tap the copy button

4) Tap where you want to paste the text (this can be in the same app, or you can copy text between two apps, such as copying from a web page and pasting into an email, etc.)

5) Tap the “paste” button and you’re done

If that’s not clear, watch the iPad copy and pasting video tutorial in my app and you’ll see exactly how it’s done.

Let me know if that helps, and thanks for being a student!

Worth

I received a question from an iPad student who wrote:

“Is there another free app, other then Google ,when I use it I continuously have a block in the centre telling me about cellular data.”

My response:

Hi Theresa,

First off, to be clear, any talk of extra charges is not coming from my app or from any other app where you might see the message, but from an Internet service provider. The message is actually appearing “over” the app, so to speak, rather than in it (or coming from it).

I’m not sure what exact message you’re getting about cellular data, since you didn’t say, but you would be probably either getting a message about setting up using cellular data, OR you already have it set up and have already used up the amount of “bandwidth” in the plan you paid for.

Either way, you can avoid the issue by connecting to a Wi-Fi network — something most people have at home these days.

The cell phone companies like Verizon, AT&T, etc. charge an arm and a leg for you to use the cell towers to send and receive information over the Internet (including the instructional videos in my app). It’s available almost anywhere, but is pretty expensive and usually not that fast.

Wi-Fi is usually connected to a cable or DSL line, which has a flat monthly fee with no real limits on how much you use (or extra charges if you go over the limit like you have with cell data), and is usually a lot faster. Each Wi-Fi hotspot is only in one specific area, however, like a home or a coffee shop, etc.

You can connect to a Wi-Fi network by going somewhere with one, whether that is at your house, a friend’s house, or a public access point. One you are in range of the signal, you may be asked automatically if you’d like to join.

If you aren’t asked automatically, just tap on the Settings app icon (the grey gear on your home screen) then tap Wi-Fi near the top of the left-hand column. Look on the right side of the screen and if the top says “Off” tap it once to turn it on.

Under the Wi-Fi on/off switch you should see a list of available networks. Tap the one you want to join and it will get a check mark on the line to show you’re connected. You may be asked for a password which “unlocks” the network so you can connect to it.

Once you’ve done this, the iPad should connect automatically again when you get in range in the future, and apps that use the Internet (like my iPad tutorial app) should work without problems.

Once you’re connected you might want to review the video lesson covering how to use Wi-Fi which is located in the tutorial app by opening up the app, tapping “iPad Lessons”, then tapping “iPad Settings” on the next screen, then you should see the Wi-Fi lesson right near the top of the list. Tapping it will play the video and you’ll see what I just described for you.

I hope that makes sense, and helps.

Worth

An iPad student named Peter wrote asking me if he could run OS X Lion (or Mountain Lion) on his iPad. My response:

Hi Peter,
If I’m understanding your question correctly, you want to run OS X Lion on your iPad? This is not possible. Let me explain — but first, a clarification of terms.

“OS” is short for “Operating System” which is the underlying software needed to run a computing device including a desktop or laptop computer, or a mobile device such as the iPad or iPhone, etc.

An OS has to be written specifically for the platform (type of device) it’s going to run on. There are many reasons for this, most of which have to do with the differences in the hardware — that is to say, the physical parts of the device including the type of processor (the “brain” if you will) as well as the screen, etc.

OS X, formerly Mac OS X, which includes Lion and the newly released Mountain Lion (OS X versions 10.7 and 10.8 respectively) is an operating system designed to run exclusively on Apple’s Mac computers — so all Macs including MacBook, iMac, Mac Pro, etc.

iOS, on the other hand, is written to run exclusively on Apple’s mobile devices including iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. So there is no such thing as “Lion iOS”.

The current version of iOS is version 5, and the new iOS 6 is coming out this fall – most likely in September.

Once iOS 6 is available, you’ll be able to update to it for free by opening the Settings App, tapping General, then tapping Software Updates.

I have a video lesson that goes over the basic process of updating that you can find by opening my iPad tutorial app, then on the main screen (tap the house icon to get there if needed) you can tap “iPad Lessons”, then tap “iPad Settings” and then swipe upwards to look for the lesson titled “Settings: General: Software Updates”.

That lesson walks you through the update process so you can do it yourself when the new version of iOS arrives.

I hope that helps, and thanks for being a student!

I was went a question about the Skype app for iPad by a student named Willis who wrote:

“I have the Skype app. I have never used it.

Tonight I received a Skype urgent message. When I went to the Skype app there was a place to answer or decline. I did nothing.

I had no way to I. D. who sent the message. Any instructions for using Skype?

Willis”

My response:

Willis,
The Skype message you received is a form of spam, or possibly an attempt to scam you out of money, a password, or other valuable information. It’s best to decline these calls.

For many years I’ve instructed my students using Skype and similar programs to go into the chat program’s privacy settings and set it to only allow people to call you if they’re in your contact list. I do this because these kinds of unwanted messages (let’s just call them all “spam” for simplicity’s sake, even if some are technically scams, etc.) are common and obviously best avoided.

Unfortunately, Skype (owned by Microsoft these days) has not seen fit to give the iPad version of Skype any way to set the app to only accept calls from people you know. We’re limited to the options they give us of course.

According their website, you can open a copy of Skype on a computer and set your privacy setting there and it will then work the same way on your iPad, however I’ve read comments from people who say this doesn’t work so I can’t make any promises.

Until Skype gets around to adding more useful options like this to their iPad app, changing the setting on a computer is the best option for protecting your privacy while still using the app.

However, if you’re not actually using Skype then the simplest thing might be to just open the app and sign out of it so it’s no longer connected and checking for messages. Since Skype is one of the apps which runs in the background, this might help save a bit on your battery life too since it would no longer be active in the background.

I don’t currently have Skype lessons for iPad, but it is on my list of apps I plan to cover in detail in the future. I have a bunch of new lessons planned for August, so I might be able to get to Skype in the fall if everything goes well.

I hope that helps!

I was sent a question by a student of my iPad tutorials named Sunette who wrote asking:

“How do you create files?”

My response:

Hi Sunette,

I’m wondering if maybe you’re asking how to make a folder? Files and folders are two different things — broadly speaking, files come in two basic types, applications (apps for short) and documents. Folders, on the other hand, are containers for organizing those files.

This is a common point of confusion for people, so let me explain further and then I’ll tell you how to do the steps.

Apps like the tutorial app you used to send me this question are added, as you probably know, by downloading from the App Store.

Many (but not all) apps allow you to create documents. Examples would be the Camera app allows you to create a photo, which would be an image document; Pages allows you to create word processing documents; etc.

On iPad you create and locate those documents from within a given app, which is a little different than on computers where traditionally you keep them someplace like the Documents folder and then access them either through the folder or through the application.

Which brings me to folders.

Folders on a computer are containers that can hold either documents or applications. Think of a manilla folder in the “real world” which holds pieces of paper with information on them. This is just like a folder on a computer holding a document file, and is where the terms “file” and “folder” come from in the first place.

On an iPad or iPhone, folders are designed to only hold app icons, since you don’t really have icons for documents the way you do on a computer.

To make a folder to organize your apps, you just tap and hold your finger on an app icon until they all start wiggling on the screen (you’ll see what I mean when you do it). Once they’re wiggling, you can put your finger on any of those apps and drag them around on the screen to organize them.

If you drag an app icon over another app icon and hold it there for a moment, it will create a folder for you to drop it into, and give you the opportunity to rename that folder if you wish. Other apps can then be dragged into that folder until it’s full.

You can move folders once they’re created by dragging them around in the same manner, but you can’t put a folder inside of another one (unlike a computer).

Once you’re doing moving apps and folders around, just press the Home button at the bottom of the screen and everything will stop wiggling and go back to normal.

I have a video lesson which shows you the steps that I just described located in my tutorial app. Just open the app and go to the main screen (tap the Main button shaped like a house if you need to). Then tap “iPad Lessons”, then tap “Basics for iPad’.

You’ll end up in a list of iPad basics lessons. Swiping upward will take you down the list and about half-way down you’ll see a video lesson called “Moving, Organizing and Deleting Apps” which goes over all of this step-by-step so you can see how it’s done.

I hope that helps, and thanks for being a student!

Worth

I got a question from a student named Tom who was wondering how to fix it so that every time he sent an email from his iPad, it would automatically print his name. This is something known as a “signature” and when you first get an iPad the signature is set to “sent from my iPad”.

Automatic email signatures have been around for many years, and can be very handy to have, especially for a work email address where you might want to mention the name of the business and contact information.

You can change this setting very easily and make it so your iPad adds anything you want (or nothing at all if you just want to get rid of “sent from my iPad”) by doing the following:

Open the Settings app (the grey gear icon), then tap “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”.

On the screen that comes up you can then swipe upwards and look about 2/3rds of the way down the page for “Signature”. Tapping that will take you to a screen where you can type in whatever you want (you’ll also find a “clear” button in the upper right corner of that screen to erase everything in the signature box with one tap.

Once you’ve entered what you want, tap the back button (arrow in the upper left) and you should be good to go.

  I hope that helps!

I received an iPad question from a student named Ronald who wrote asking:

“How do I use the iPad to talk to and visually see my son on the screen.
I live in Pittsburgh and he lives in Houston Texas.
   Thanks, Ron”

My response:

Hi Ron,

It sounds like you want to do what is called a “video chat”. Video chats are a great way to keep in touch with your family — I’ve used them for years with my parents (who live about 5,000 miles away) to keep in touch despite the distance.

You can do video chats with an iPad as long as you have an iPad 2 or newer which have the built-in cameras. Apple provides you with a free app called “Facetime” which does video chats.

You might want to view the following lessons for more information about how to tell if your iPad has the needed camera, and how to use Facetime:

1) watch the “overview of the physical iPad device” which is located in the Basics for iPad section at the very top of the list. From the main (house icon) screen of the tutorial app, tap on “iPad Lessons”, then “Basics for iPad” to find the lesson.

This will teach you about locating the physical cameras on your iPad, to make sure you have the right model iPad, and what part of the device to look at to “make eye contact”, etc.

2) watch the “Facetime App” lesson which is located by going to “iPad Lessons”, then “Apps from Apple” and swiping upwards to scroll through the list until you find the lesson (they’re listed alphabetically). This lesson will teach you how to use Facetime.

As long as your son has another iPad 2 or newer, OR a modern Mac with the Facetime application installed on it, then you can do the video chats.

You should both also be connected to Wi-Fi rather than through the cell phone network like Verizon, AT&T or another cell phone company if possible (i.e. home DSL or cable with Wi-Fi is fine).

I hope that helps, and thanks for being a student!

I was sent a question by Carol, who just downloaded my Tips for iPad app from the App Store. She wrote:

Hi Worth,

I currently own an iPad (gifted to me, otherwise I wouldn’t have purchased one), and basically am clueless about it’s operations. I don’t have an iPhone, but a Blackberry, and so none of this makes sense.

I purchased your tutorial app and unless I am doing something incorrectly, don’t see the step by step lessons that you promised in your virtual free tour.

Is there something I am not opening that guides me to full knowledge of this computer?

I am not interested in Facebook nor Twitter, but just want to be able to use this as easily as I use my PC or my BB.

Please reply.

Many thanks, Carol

My response:

Hi Carol,
Thanks for downloading my iPad tutorial app. All of the step-by-step video lessons in the app are located by opening the app, tapping the Home button (the house icon) if necessary, then tapping “iPad Lessons”

On the iPad Lessons screen you’ll find three main categories of lessons – “Basics for iPad”, “Apps From Apple”, and “iPad Settings” “Basics” covers covers basic concepts and fundamentals, “Apps from Apple” covers most of the apps Apple provides with the iPad with more coming in future updates, and “iPad Settings” covers the many options in the Settings App.

Tapping any one of the above options will take you to a list of lessons in that category. After tapping on any of the categories swiping up or down on the list of lessons will scroll through them, tapping the play button for any one of the lessons will start playing it.

I would start with the iPad Basics section and then look at specific apps for more help after that.

The Facebook & Twitter section is optional and mainly there so you can keep up with my Twitter posts (you don’t even need a Twitter account to read them) where I mostly share links to useful or interesting articles about computers, iPads, and related technology.

Let me know if that helps.

Worth

I received a question from a student named Virginia, who asked whether Apple’s iCloud service could be used with a Windows PC (a Toshiba laptop in her case) or if iCloud was only available for Apple’s Mac computers.

Yes, you can use iCloud features on a Toshiba or any other brand computer, not just on one of Apple’s Macs.

If you have iOS 5 or higher on an iPad or iPhone, you have everything you need to use it there once you’ve created a free iCloud account. On a Mac computer the software is installed as long as you have Mac OS X 10.7 (a.k.a. Lion) or 10.8 (a.k.a. Mountain Lion).

On a Windows computer you need to be running Windows Vista or Windows 7 or better, and you need to install the free iCloud Control Panel software, which you can download from Apple by clicking here.

I will be recording lessons in July which will go over the use of iCloud in more detail, including not only how to use it on an iPad or iPhone, but also how to set it up and use it on a computer. Once they’re ready, the lessons will be added to the app.

I recently wrote an article about the dangers of trojans, which are a type of “malware” somewhat similar to a virus. In the article I mentioned how it’s important to keep your computer up-to-date as one important step to protecting it from dangerous software.

In response to my article I was sent a question by one of my computer newsletter subscribers, Sara, who wanted to know

“What about iPads? I’ve never seen an update for the iPad. Is there a way to protect it?”

Well Sara, iPads at this time have no similar threats. One of the benefits of the App Store is that if you only download free or paid apps from there, you’re at much lower risk of malware because Apple vets the apps before allowing them into the store.

This doesn’t mean it’s impossible for a threat to develop due to a bug or other security vulnerability.

This is why updating an iPad is just as important as updating a regular computer. If you’re up to date with iOS 5 then you will see when updates are available by the appearance of a red “badge” with a number (like 1 for one update) that appears on the Settings app icon.

The update can be installed by going into the Settings app, tapping General, then Updates.

If you still are running iOS 4 you’ll need to install the update through iTunes on your computer and then you’ll be able to update directly through the iPad from that point onwards. I strongly recommend staying up-to-date, so definitely do this if you’re still running iOS 4.

I have a video lesson covering updating your iPad in my iPad tutorial app. You can find the video lesson by opening the app, then tapping the house icon in the lower left to make sure you’re at the app’s home/main menu. On the main menu tap iPad Lessons, then tap iPad Settings and swipe upward to look for “Settings: General: Software Updates” and tap the play button to watch the steps.

   Hope that helps!

I received an iPad question from Kathy, sent in via the ask question function of my iPad tutorial app. She writes:

“Have a question about your iPad ? Yes!!

Can I print my contacts with a new compatible printer? Is it possible to place a contact in more than one group if so HOW!

This little grandma just wants to put her address book on her new toy, have it printable, and updateable.

I promise cookies, the kind you eat, for some help.

Thanks, Kathy”

So let’s see — first off, I had to double-check this, but it doesn’t seem that Apple has given us any way to print our list of contacts unfortunately.

They are pretty good about listening to customer suggestions, so you might want to use the official iPad feeback & suggestion form to tell them you’d like to be able to do this! They may add it to the next version of the software, you never know.

Now for working with groups in Contacts. For those who don’t know, groups just refers to organizing your contacts into categories like “Business” and “Personal” so you can just see your coworkers or just see your personal friends.

This is another gap Apple needs to fill, as there is no way to add people to groups directly on the iPad yet. Once they’re in the groups, you can see them in the list, but you can’t change who is in the groups. However, unlike printing the contact list, there is what we call a “workaround”.

What you need to do is go to iCloud.com (and unfortunately you’ll probably need to do this on a computer) and sign into your iCloud account with your Apple ID. Once you’ve signed in, you can click Contacts, then click the red “bookmark” button to get to the Groups screen where you can add groups, remove them, and drag your individual contacts into those groups.

If you want a person in more than one group, just drag them into one, then the other, and they’ll appear in both.

I recorded a video showing how groups work and covering most of this and I’ve added it to Basic Tips for iPad. Owners of the app can watch the video by tapping the blue and yellow “How to Use iPad” icon on your home screen, then tap iPad Lessons, then tap Apps From Apple, then swipe upwards and look for the Using Groups lesson located alphabetically under “C” for Contacts.

I hope that helps, and thanks for the offer of cookies! : )

I was sent a question by Brenda, an owner of my iPad tutorial app, who asked if it was possible to send an email to “undisclosed recipients” from her iPad. Yes, you can – let me explain.

First off, for others reading this, if you’re not familiar with how this works, sometimes you may have received an email that said it was addressed to “undisclosed recipients”.

This is done by using something called “BCC” which is short for “Blind Carbon Copy”. BCC is used to send copies of an email to multiple people without revealing the list of people receiving the email.

This is something most email programs can do, and something I’ve recommended people to do for years in my computer training courses, but fortunately it’s not exclusive to computers. I’ve recommended people use BCC when sending to multiple people to help protect the recipients’ privacy and to help stop the spread of viruses, worms, and spam.

The iPad can send using BCC, but there’s a setting you may need to turn on first.

You’ll need to go into the Settings App (the grey gear icon) then go to “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” and about half way down the page you’ll find “Show To/BCC label” which you’ll want to make sure is set to On. Just tap the on/off switch if it’s not.

After that, when you’re composing an email you’ll see the CC/BCC label underneath the To: line — tap it to show the CC and BCC lines, and you can enter addresses or names there as normal.

Once you send, everybody you send it to will see “Undisclosed recipients”.

You can see how to do this by watching the video lesson as well — just open up my tutorial app, tap iPad Lessons, then tap Apps From Apple, and in the alphabetical list of lessons swipe upward and you’ll find the lesson under “M” for Mail App.

Hope that helps!

First off, for others reading this, if you're not familiar with how this works, sometimes you may have received an email that said it was addressed to "undisclosed recipients".
This is done by using something called "BCC" which is short for "Blind Carbon Copy". BCC is used to send copies of an email to multiple people without revealing the list of people receiving the email.

The iPad can send using BCC, but there's a setting you may need to turn on first.
You'll need to go into the Settings App (the grey gear icon) then go to "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and about half way down the page you'll find "Show To/BCC label" which you'll want to make sure is set to On. Just tap the on/off switch if it's not.

Once you send, everybody you send it to will see "Undisclosed recipients".
You can see how to do this by watching the video lesson as well -- just open up my tutorial app, tap iPad Lessons, then tap Apps From Apple, and in the alphabetical list of lessons swipe upward and you'll find the lesson under "M" for Mail App.
Hope that helps!</itunes:summary>

An owner of my iPad tutorial app named Doug Brown sent the following question in via the “Ask iPad Question” feature of the app:

“It’s taking many hours to download movies to my iPad! Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks. “

Hi Doug, I’d like to help with your question, but I need a few more details.

First off, are you talking about movies you’ve purchased through the iTunes app? The files can be quite large and normally will take a little while to download.

Also, are you trying to get several movies at once? If so, you may be causing a “traffic jam” by trying to get too many at once.

Are you doing this on WiFi, or do you have a 3G iPad and are trying to download over the cell phone 3G network?

WiFi is *much* faster, and you should also try to avoid downloading a lot over 3G because the cell companies often hit you with extra fees if you do (they’re very stingy).

You can see if you’re using WiFi by going to the home screen (where all the icons are) and looking at the top of the screen on the left side — if you’re connected to WiFi you’ll see a kind of radio wave icon (curved lines like a cartoon drawing of a radio wave).

If you need help learning how to connect to WiFi then go into my tutorial app and go to iPad Lessons, then go to iPad Settings, and look for “Settings: Wi-Fi: Connecting” for a lesson on how to do that.

But overall, downloading a bunch of videos at the same time can be expected to take a while, and in my own experience when connected to a decent speed Internet connection via WiFi it can easily take 20 minutes or more to download a single movie.

The speed depends on how fast the Internet connection you’re using is, and how much it’s being used at that moment (including what you’re doing on the iPad, but also what other people on the network may be doing too if it’s a shared connection).

Let me know if that helps and if you have further questions, and thanks for being a student!

I had a couple of questions sent in from the “Ask iPad Question” part of the iPad tutorial app — both are related to the newly released iOS 5.1 software and how to update.

First, Kathy asked:

> Hi,
>I cannot get the iOS5 to download on my iPad 1.
> Can you walk me through the proper steps? Thanks

I also received a question from Patty, who wrote:

> How do I upgrade ipad2 ios5 to ios5.1?
> Why can't I buy the earlier version of Pages that works
> with my pad?
> I really do not want to upgrade. Some users say upgrade
> induces new problems.

You can update your iPad to the latest software by going to the Settings App, then General, and then Software Updates.

The steps for how to update your iPad to the latest software are included in the iPad tutorial app
– here’s how to find the lesson:

Go into the tutorial app, tap on iPad Lessons, then tap the menu option “iPad Settings”. On the next screen, swipe upwards to scroll through the list of lessons.

Look for “Settings: General: Software Updates” and tap that to watch the video lesson that shows you how the updates work.

Before you do the update, you want to make sure you’re connected to a WiFi network. Some iPads can get onto the cell phone network for Internet, but WiFi is faster and has fewer hidden charges so it’s the better option if you have it.

If you need help connecting to WiFi there is a lesson about it near the top of the list of iPad Settings lessons.

I also suggest plugging the iPad into a power outlet while doing the update just as a precaution.

As far as Pages goes, the app had to be updated to work with features which were introduced with iOS 5.1 — the way the App Store works is they only offer the most current version of any app for sale. Apple tries to keep things simple for people by only offering the version that works with the current software.

Fortunately, the update is free and you have little to worry about switching from iOS 5 to 5.1 – it’s really a very minor update compared to iOS 4 to 5 and you shouldn’t have any issues.

Let me know if that helps, and thanks for being a student!

In this lesson, a preview of my new app which teaches you how to use the iPad with easy video lessons, we take a look at how to use Airplay to beam video and audio from an iPad to a TV set and/or sound system via an Apple TV or an Airport Express.

Airplay is very easy to use and works with a wide variety of video and audio, including this video if you’re watching it on an iPad (or on iPhone or iPod Touch). I find the Airplay video streaming to be especially cool now that my lessons are available for iOS devices.

A few years ago when I started this business (teaching computers only at that point) I had to decide between having my customers able to play my lessons on DVD or on CD-ROMs. I ended up choosing CDs for a bunch of reasons I won’t bore you with, but that meant my students couldn’t watch the lessons on TV if they wanted to.

Now we can watch video on TV, a computer, an iPad, an iPhone, or all of the above, and do so with ease. Gotta love it.

My iPad course app is currently being reviewed by Apple for inclusion in the App Store.

New York Times columnist David Pogue has posted both a funny video (see below, Flash required unfortunately) as well as a more serious-toned article comparing the new Samsung Galaxy Tab with (obviously) the iPad.

On the plus side, Pogue says: “The most hotly awaited Android tablet is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a sleek, sturdy slab, 7.5 by 4.7 by 0.5 inches. The glass front is a 7-inch multitouch screen; the back is off-white plastic…

Samsung sweated the details on this thing. The screen is gorgeous.

The touch response is immediate and reliable. The whole thing is superfast and a pleasure to use. “

On the down side, “As smooth and slick and convenient as the Galaxy is, though, it’s not without its frustrations… the Galaxy’s browser shows the stripped-down, mobile versions of [many] sites. According to Samsung, there’s no way to turn that feature off and no way to visit the full-size sites.”

“Another problem: most of the 100,000 apps on the Android store are designed for a phone-size screen, not a tablet. The Galaxy either blows them up, at the expense of clarity, or lets them float in the center of the larger screen with a Texas-size black border. “

Overall the gist is, it has a lot going for it but seems a little undersized and overpriced. I’ve had a few conversations with friends and clients about the iPad size and I think it hits the sweet spot pretty well, though I sometimes wish for a little more room.

The Galaxy Tab seems oversize for a phone and undersize for a tablet, but that may be just me. For the full review, head over to Pogue’s review of the Galaxy Tab on The New York Times website.

On Monday, Apple released the GM of iOS 4.2, which basically means iOS 4 is finally here for iPad. Just wanted to post a quick update and let you know that now that iOS 4 is available for iPad, I’ll begin recording iPad training video lessons and post them to the site.

I started working on this project right after the iPad was originally released early this year, but due to a series of complications (both technical and otherwise) the project was held back to the point where it seemed to just make more sense to wait until iOS 4 was out for iPad.

I just finished the update process and got all my files synced back onto “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (the name of my iPad) and it’s very late, so unfortunately I won’t be able to play with the updated OS until tomorrow.

I have a couple projects to finish up in the next few days while I check out the changes to the iPad software, and then I’ll start getting some lessons recorded which will start showing up on my site and on the podcast.

If there are any topics you’d like me to start with, let me know in the comments.

I also talk a little about how today is “Towel Day”, and why I’m wearing a towel in the video, plus how the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy relates to Apple’s iPad.

This one is just for fun, and in dedication to the wonderful, late Douglas Adams who would have been such a huge fan of the Apple iPad.

More iPad how-to training is on the way once I get caught up after a broken computer and a bad cold. See you soon, and happy Towel Day!

<itunes:summary>This video is just a quick update to thank my subscribers for the positive reviews (despite having only just added the podcast to iTunes a few days ago) and to let you know more lessons are on the way.

I also talk a little about how today is "Towel Day", and why I'm wearing a towel in the video, plus how the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy relates to Apple's iPad.

This one is just for fun, and in dedication to the wonderful, late Douglas Adams who would have been such a huge fan of the Apple iPad.

More iPad how-to training is on the way once I get caught up after a broken computer and a bad cold. See you soon, and happy Towel Day!

In the previous lesson I showed the steps for how to add an “other” type of email account (such as the one provided by your Internet service provider) to the Mail app so you can check your email on your iPad.

This video lesson shows you the steps to set up one of the popular email services such as Gmail, MobileMe, Yahoo Mail or AOL (it seems people still use AOL!).

In the lesson I demonstrate using Gmail, but the steps are the same if you use Yahoo or one of the other options. All you’ll need to follow the steps are your email address and password.

In this iPad how to lesson, I’ll show you the steps for setting up the Apple mail app on your iPad so you can check and download your email.

The Mail app is designed to make setup easy if you use a number of major email providers such as Apple’s MobileMe service, Yahoo or Gmail, but can be slightly more complicated to set up if you use an “other” provider such as the email account provided by your Internet service provider (ISP).

In this video lesson I’ll step you through the process of setting up Mail using the “other” option, while giving my usual Plain English explanations of computer terms such as mail server. In the next lesson I’ll post, I’ll show you the steps for how to set up the Mail app to use other services such as Gmail on your iPad.

I’ve been thinking for some time now that I might branch out from just doing computer training to also start doing iPad training. Having gotten my hands on one of Apple’s new devices just yesterday, I decided to shoot a little test video to see how it might work.

Below you’ll find a quick iPad lesson on using the Photos app that comes on the iPad. This just gives you a quick overview of Photos and how easy it is to browse through and display photos on your iPad.

Note: this is my first attempt at shooting the screen of the iPad, and was mainly done as a test.

Well, it’s been a few days since the official release of Apple’s new iPad. For some reason, UPS decided they don’t ship on Saturdays on the Big Island (despite apparently delivering on Oahu) so nobody on the island was able to get their iPad delivered until Monday.

I had originally pre-ordered the 3G model but decided to get one of the WiFi only models now, keep it for a couple of months, and then upgrade to the 3G. I’ve been very eager to get my hands on the iPad and see if it, as I hoped, would be a useful tool for my business.

I was able to pick the iPad up on Monday (yesterday) just before the Mac store in town closed and after a long long wait for it to sync with my iMac (which I grumbled a little about on my Twitter account) I finally was able to start using it around 11pm last night, and have had some more time to play with it today.

The verdict: while there are, as yet, very few native iPad apps available, the ones I’ve used so far have been great and the device is simply a joy to use. I already can see I’ll be able to do a majority of my work on the iPad, with more options becoming available as more native apps come out.

(The iPhone apps I tested all seem to work just fine, but look either small and crisp in the center of a big black void on the screen, or very blocky and ugly when blown up to fill the screen using the 2X button)

I’ll post more thoughts and reviews of specific apps and functions of the device in the future.

Source: Apple iPad First Impressions (Video)
